'Rim jhim gire saawan' on streets of Bombay (Mumbai)

(Author: Alex Almeida)

The favorite season of India and most of Mumbaikar’s is back the lovely monsoon. The time when season arrives it’s a common thing for people to share a post on the classic song Rim jihm gire saawan.
The hit song from the film Manzil (1979) where we see a younger Amitabh Bachchan wearing a suit and beautiful Moushmi Chatterjee in chiffon saree enjoying the rains of the city at different locations in background of the song.
The making of the song has lot of interesting stories to tell. It was not the artificial rain as usually used in film shoots but was actually pouring in Mumbai when the song was shot and both the lead actors were totally drenched.
Amitabh Bachchan being taller than Mosuhmi Chatterjee had to match the steps while walking on the streets in the rain while he had to take smaller steps to match with his costar. But sometimes it would happen that Moushmi Chatterjee would feel she is left behind and would go further and camera would follow her leaving Amitabh Bachchan behind.
Those days there was no waterproof makeup and shooting the whole song in the torrential rains was not easy. Moushmi Chatterjee’s eye line would come down to her cheeks and get mix up with her blush make up.This would happened frequently and she would have to apply the make up every time firstly by drying up her wet face.
It was pouring so heavily in the city the day that both the actors could not here the song at all.Until the unit started directing then with a handkerchief for action and cut.
Upon completing the shoot while Moushmi Chatterjee was returning home she realized that due to the heavy rains the green color design of her saree got printed on her body.
Manzil was started it 1972 when both Amitabh Bachchan and Moushmi Chatterjee were newcomers and lesser known actors the song was short around that time. The film was in making for a longer period or else to shoot the song after their stardom post 1973 it would have been very difficult.
Rim Jhim Gire Saawan remains a chartbuster even today and will always remain.Recently a 60 plus couple in Mumbai were enjoying the Mumbai rains and created an exact replica of the song which set the social media on fire. This is a great tribute to the song.

But the mother of all these vamps is none other than Lalita Pawar . Lalita Pawar started acting at a very young age in the film Raja Harischandra (1928) . And later went on to play leading roles in many films in the '40s. In the year 1942, in the film Jung-E-Azadi , she had to be slapped by her co-star Master Bhagwan . The timing of the shot went wrong, and Bhagwan Dada slapped her so hard that it damaged her eye. The damage was a permanent loss to her, and she had many surgeries to be done as her eye vein was damaged. After three years of treatment, she was left with a defective eye, forcing her to switch to character roles. In the coming years, Lalita Pawar became one of the most established vamps of Hindi and Marathi cinema that people would re

For 12 years 'Naina Barse Rimjhim Rimjhim' had no takers

(Author: Alex Almeida) Who Kaun Thi (1964) one of the finest thrillers during the golden era of Indian Cinema with memorable haunting music by Madan Mohan which gave evergreen songs like Lag Jaa Gale, Jo Humne Dastaan Apni Sunai,Shok Nazar Ki Bijliyaan,Tiki Riki Tiki Riki Takori and Naina Barse ... The music of the film was a big hit. Lag Ja Gale and Naina Barse became all time classics and played even today by many on their cellphones, there was a time when the haunting tune of Naina Barse had no takers for twelve years. Madan Mohan had composed the song in 1952 but no filmmaker wanted to use the tune as they were not finding a haunting situation in their film where the song would work.  'Who Kaun Thi' was made on a complete different note much ahead of her times where every five minutes there would be a haunting situation in the film. Sadhna and Raj Khosla were looking for a haunting tune for the film and came across the tune. Madan Mohan then decided to u
