Who Kaun Thi (1964) one of the finest thrillers during the golden era of Indian Cinema with memorable haunting music by Madan Mohan which gave evergreen songs like Lag Jaa Gale, Jo Humne Dastaan Apni Sunai,Shok Nazar Ki Bijliyaan,Tiki Riki Tiki Riki Takori and Naina Barse...
The music of the film was a big hit. Lag Ja Gale and Naina Barse became all time classics and played even today by many on their cellphones, there was a time when the haunting tune of Naina Barse had no takers for twelve years.
Madan Mohan had composed the song in 1952 but no filmmaker wanted to use the tune as they were not finding a haunting situation in their film where the song would work.
'Who Kaun Thi' was made on a complete different note much ahead of her times where every five minutes there would be a haunting situation in the film. Sadhna and Raj Khosla were looking for a haunting tune for the film and came across the tune.
Madan Mohan then decided to use the tune for the film finding it a perfect match for the film’s situation. The song Naina Barse was played many a times in the film whenever Manoj Kumar sees ghostly figure of Sadhna as a white clad women.
The haunting tune of Naina Barse was also used for many situations in the film. The most haunting situation remains before the opening credits when Manoj Kumar drives his car in rainy weather while tune being played in background. And few minutes later when Sadhna enters the graveyard and the credit roll as Who Kaun Thi ?
The song was shot in Kufri (Shimla) and Lata Mangehkar wasn’t present for the recording for reasons unknown. Madan Mohan then decided to give Sadhna the vocals for the song so that the schedule doesn’t not get hampered. But onlookers present at the shoot were wondering why a male voice is being used for Sadhna. Later the song was recorded in voice of Lata Mangeshkar. It Song remains haunting even today when it’s close to complete 60 years.
