Karan-Arjun's Casting Twist: Deol Brothers were first choice for Karan-Arjun, But Salman Khan replaced Ajay Devgan

(Author: Alex Almeida)

In 70s Rakesh Roshan didn’t have a successful career as hero. But in late 80s he stepped into direction and became one of the top director, In mid 90s he decided to make a revenge drama based on reincarnation of two brothers.
To get the chemistry perfect between two brothers Rakesh Roshan decided to cast Deol brothers Sunny and Bobby in lead. But Sunny declined the offer as Bobby was gearing up for his debut in home production Barsaat (1995). While Sunny was a star and felt working together at this point will sideline Bobby.
He then cast Shahrukh Khan who had recently gained stardom and Ajay Devgan as two brother’s film was then titled Kaynaath. But Ajay Devgan later opted out of the film as he wanted to do Sharukh Khan’s role and for other reasons.
Rakesh Roshan then approached Salman Khan who was having a dull phase in his career as in last two years most of his films had tasted dust at the box office. He was shooting for Hum Aapke Hain Kaun (1994) simultaneously and was having hectic schedule and wanted to leave Karan-Arjun.
He discussed the same with Sooraj Barjatya who advised him not to leave the film as the script had power to become a box office success. Salman Khan took this advice and shot for both the films. Karan-Arjun went on to become a blockbuster while Hum Aapke hain Kaun released few months before, became the longest running Hindi film after Sholay (1975).
After the film’s release till date Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan are known as Karan-Arjun of Hindi cinema which could also be seen in the recent blockbuster Pathaan (2023). Where audiences loved their action sequence and memes started following on social media saying mere Karan Arjun aaenge.
