From Engineering to Acting: The Rise of Arun Govil

Arun Govil is an Indian actor who gained immense popularity and recognition for portraying the character of Lord Rama in the television series, "Ramayan" (1987). Born on January 12, 1958, in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, Govil spent his childhood in a middle-class family. His father was a government officer, while his mother was a homemaker.

Govil completed his graduation in engineering from Jiwaji University in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, before pursuing his passion for acting. He began his acting career with the film "Paheli" in 1977 and went on to appear in several other movies, including "Saanch Ko Aanch Nahin" (1979), "Ayaash" (1982), and "Paapi Pet Ka Sawaal Hai" (1984). However, his career took a turn when he was offered the role of Lord Rama in the television series, "Ramayan" (1987), which would become a landmark in the Indian television industry.

"Ramayan" was a massive hit, and Govil's portrayal of Lord Rama was appreciated by the audience across the country. The show not only made him a household name but also established him as one of the most popular actors in the country. He received several awards and accolades for his role, including the Uttar Pradesh Government's Yash Bharti Award and the Indian Telly Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role. He also gained international recognition when the series was broadcast in several countries, including the UK, USA, and USSR.

Young Arun Govil

After the success of "Ramayan," Govil continued to work in films and television shows, but he could not replicate the same success he achieved with "Ramayan". In an interview with NDTV, he revealed that his career came to a standstill after the show, and he struggled to find good roles. He was primarily offered mythological roles, which he declined, and was eventually left with no work.

Despite this, Govil never lost his popularity among his fans, who still remember him as Lord Rama. In an interview with Indian Express, he mentioned that people still recognize him as Ram and not by his real name, Arun Govil. He also stated that he is content with the love and respect he has received from his fans.

Apart from acting, Govil is also actively involved in politics. He contested the 1991 Lok Sabha elections from the Ghaziabad constituency on a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket but lost. Later, he joined the Samajwadi Party and was appointed as the Chairman of the UP Film Development Council in 2004. He resigned from the post in 2009, citing personal reasons.

Govil is also a philanthropist and is associated with several social causes. He is a patron of the Akhil Bhartiya Ramayana Sansthan, which promotes the teachings of Lord Rama. He is also associated with the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) and has participated in several charity events organized by the organization.

Govil is married to Shrilekha Govil, and the couple has two children, a son named Amal and a daughter named Sonika. Amal is a director and has directed several television shows, including "Ek Mahal Ho Sapno Ka" and "Maayka."

In conclusion, Arun Govil's contribution to Indian television is unmatched. His portrayal of Lord Rama in "Ramayan" remains etched in the memory of Indian audiences even after several decades. Despite facing challenges in his career, Govil has remained humble and continues to inspire his fans through his work and philanthropic activities.
